From Marvel Studios comes 'Doctor Strange', the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place - a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a centre for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange - armed with newly acquired magical powers - is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

Doctor Strange Review by Regina

1) Did you like it?

Yes.

2) Why?

Another origin story, Doctor Strange is the tale of Stephen Strange, an arrogant surgeon who, having lost use of his hands, visits Kathmandu, Nepal to heal himself. Let’s be honest — it’s the same story recycled over and over again, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be entertaining.

While for me some parts of the film are dull and slow, overall it was engaging, with pleasing visuals, trippy magic, and several chuckle-out-loud moments, thanks to Doctor Strange’s dry, sarcastic humour and the potential puns his family name gives us.

3) “You would enjoy this movie if…”

You’re into Marvel superheroes.

4) “This movie made me think about…”

How many possible Marvel movies are there. I’m not a comic reader so I don’t know just how many superheroes they have, but it seems like a never-ending source material for these kinds of movies. I just wonder how they’re going to fit it all in and give each superhero the attention that each deserves and keep the timeline consistent across all films — surely that is quite a challenge.

5) Overall rating?

3 stars. (Posted on 8/03/2017)
