Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour.

1) Did you like it?

War movies aren’t really my thing – but a war movie about a pacifist? Now that’s something interesting. Did I like this film? Well – kind of. Let me explain…

2) Why?

Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss is Hacksaw Ridge’s strongest feature. I was completely charmed (insert heart eyes emoji here) by his portrayal of this simple, yet strong character. But it seems like Garfield is really the only actor who’s really given a chance to shine. Once Doss enlists, we meet his battalion, which includes a bunch of interesting characters…but we barely get to know them before they’re all bundled off to war where they all become a blur. In fact, even Garfield’s character fades into the background when the focus of this film shifts and the action is kicked up a notch.

3) You would enjoy this movie if…

You’re into war movies or video games about war. For a movie about a pacifist, Hacksaw Ridge is seriously, awkwardly in love with war, and it doesn’t waste time, opening with a gruesome sequence set on the battlefield before circling back to cover Desmond’s childhood. Not for the squeamish.

4) This movie made me think about…

War. Turns out it really is good for absolutely nothing.

5) Overall rating?

Three stars. Pew pew pew! (Posted on 30/03/2017)
