A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami. At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, Moonlight is a ground-breaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Jenkins's staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.

Moonlight Review by Michelle
Star
Chiron is growing up poor, African American and gay in one of Miami’s toughest neighbourhoods. His mother is addicted to drugs and he’s relentlessly bullied at school. The odds are stacked against him. In Moonlight, we meet Chiron three times: the first as a child, the second as a teenager and the third as an adult.

1) Did you like it?

Yep. So did the people who hand out Oscars. Moonlight took out the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay – as well as the award for Best Picture.

2) Why?

Remember when movies with multi-squillion dollar budgets and big name directors were pretty much guaranteed to win all the critical acclaim? Isn’t it great that a film with a budget of $1.5 million, shot in less than a month can swoop in and pick up some of the industry’s biggest awards? Moonlight is a visually and thematically stunning film that tells the story of a single life – a tiny tragedy that feels epic in scale.

3) You’ll enjoy this movie if…

You’re in the mood for a smart, elegantly crafted movie that’s completely engaging and quietly heartbreaking. This is a film you need to see.

4) This movie made me think about…

Race, identity, love – you know, all the big, complicated stuff. Also perspective. Chiron has a life that’s more complicated than I could ever understand. Remind me never to complain about growing up ever again…

5) Overall rating?

Duh. Five stars. (Posted on 31/05/2017)
