1. Did you like it?

2. Why/Why not?

I enjoy YA books from time to time but haven’t read the book. The film adaptation is pretty strong by itself but I couldn’t comment on the comparison to the book. I enjoyed it as a stand alone movie.

3. "You would enjoy this movie if..."

You’d have to be a bit of a YA fan. There’s some solid storytelling here. Mia is a high school senior and talented cellist who is about to embark on her life out of high school, when a tragic accident puts her in hospital in an induced coma. Mia has an out of body experience, looking down on her own body and hears all the goings on around her. It is in this state that most of the movie takes place and we hear the back story and overhear her family and friends speaking to her comatose self. It’s an interesting way of unfolding the story and works quite well. Her relationship with her punk-rocker parents is believable and quite lovely but her apparently passionate relationship with her boyfriend is less so. The film overall is strong and doesn’t suffer too much because of this.

4. "This series made me think..."

...of cellos and how great learning orchestral instruments is.

5. Stars out of five?
