I really enjoyed this female protagonist led superhero blockbuster by Marvel. The well-known battle trope of good versus evil was entertaining, easy to watch and often funny! The visuals were thrilling and special effects were also very impressive. The narrative was a little slow in parts, and the dialogue somewhat clunky - but I think overall the film works well. The appearance of Australian Ben Mendelsohn as one of the main male leads, was a nice touch.

I liked that this film had more 'depth' to it than other superhero films. I think this can be credited to Brie Larson's performance as the female lead, and the lack of a typical love interest. Also of note is the constant (but not overly hyped) theme of female empowerment. Where recent films have overtly included this theme, Captain Marvel tastefully adds it within the confines of the film.

I certainly see the appeal of the superhero genre, and especially the need for fierce female lead characters, but I've just never found myself a huge fan of the action-packed, save-the-world type film. The formulas are always the same; predictable with a little humor and a little heart. It hasn't inspired me to watch the others, but I'm glad it was able to be consumed as a stand-alone film within the ever-expanding Marvel universe of story lines and characters.

Only managed to watch 20 mins or so and the frenetic opening sequence seemed off putting for starters. Did start to settle down with an interesting storyline albeit hackneyed (MIB etc) so can only judge on what I saw....
