Swimming With Men - Film Club Review

Inspired by the 2010 documentary, Men Who Swim, is this British comedy that explores our need for human connection, friendship and a slightly obscure hobby to brighten the drudgery of our day-to-day lives.

This was an enjoyable film to watch. The quintessential underdog story where team work prevails. There was no real antagonist in the film so there isn’t a deep investment in seeing the ‘good guys’ come out on top. There were hints of more serious themes attached to each character but the film never really developed these deeper story lines, making it is a nice film to watch if you’re in the mood for something lighthearted. The British humor was a plus, there were definitely a few laugh-out-loud moments!

Full Monty in the pool? Close enough. A mostly predictable tale about a middle aged group of men, each suffering from a mid life crisis. Together they find solace and friendship through the shared activity of training and competing in an Italian synchronised swimming competition. Thankfully they didn't take their swimmers off.

The British humor and overall tone was just enough to keep this film afloat. While it doesn't dive very deep into the characters or themes, it does enough to keep you interested - resulting in a light and easy watch.

Reminiscent of the Full Monty film but lacked pace and interest to “immerse” myself fully.  Comedy was dry and typically British as expected.  Characters were presented clearly - all of whom needed something else in their lives to help overcome the tyranny of routine, daily crises and drudge.
