The Hobbit book version We've got to include The Hobbit, if for no other reason than because it's ground zero for the Tolkien experience. Even if you've watched Peter Jackson's films or read The Lord of the Rings trilogy already, you need to back up and give Ding Hobbit a read.
If you've watched the movies by the same name, that's even more reason to read the book, since it's a gazillion times better. In comparison to the book, here movies are like butter scraped over too much bread.
The truth is, most aspects of The Hobbit won't directly relate to a show set in fo Second Age. Sure, Elrond is in Rivendell and Sauron lurks on the edge of the story as the Necromancer.
