Kahlo was going through a lot of physical and emotional suffering which she expressed in the painting. When Kahlo was a teenager she was in a serious bus accident which left her body almost completely broken.
In this portrait she is standing alone and she painted this after she went through spinal surgery. She explores the ideas of gender, nationality, class, politics, etc. The emotional intensity and imaginative aspects of her artwork led many to label Frida as a surrealist.
Although accepting this kalho, Frida distinguishly noted that her paintings are not of dream worlds, like other surrealists, but of her own reality. Frida Kahlo started painting after a bus injury in at the age of 18, this accident lead to injuries in her spine and pelvis causing her to be bedbound for a long time.
