henry reyna sleepy lagoon A consummate theater guy, Zoot Suit was an established Broadway play before he filmed a version of it in As a filmed play more than a film, it's a little rough around the edges, since you're arranging things for a traditional stage perspective but also competing against that vantage point with camerawork.
Valdez makes liberal use of that freedom teyna setting the audience's eye, and the camera moves in and out of the various dance numbers and songs.
There were times where I would have just liked to have…. The play itself was indeed the first play by a Chicano playwright to be produced on Broadway. My dad has begged me to watch this for years and dang it's a hard movie to find, but some On Demand channel actually had it so why not? It's fine????

It's really adapted from the play it comes from in the sense the entire thing is within a stage and sets move around, musical interludes are introduced and the narrator Olmos plays a pretty hefty role of background standing guiding us through the narrative. I found this at times, a little misplaced it's the Fences syndrome where I'm watching a straight play adaptation on screen but overall it works.
It's a shame this didn't run long on Broadway but thankfully this film adaptation is a great step in Chicano filmmaking, something I want to see a lot more of! Zoot Suit is certainly an experience.
Overall this is a great example of taking and acclaimed play and transferring it to screen well. Orale pues give this movie a watch vato. Find the original here!]
