In an ISPC manipulation, in the mostly congruent condition, the majority of stimuli are congruent, so the proportion of undetected word-reading errors would be higher in this condition, compared to the mostly-incongruent condition. In this study, we investigated whether or not inadvertent word reading has a role in the ISPC effect. To this end, the ISPC effect observed with normal and difficult-to-read stimuli were compared. Reading was made difficult by presenting words upside-down. Our results showed that Stroop facilitation observed with mostly-congruent items diminished with upside-down stimuli.
