In the first study to report on the health effects of exposure to a toxic environmental chemical over three human generations, a new study has found that granddaughters whose grandmothers were exposed to the pesticide DDT have higher rates of obesity and earlier first menstrual periods. The Child Health and Development Studies is a unique project that has followed 20, pregnant women and their families for more than 60 years. These "founding grandmothers" in the study gave blood samples at each trimester during pregnancy and one sample shortly after birth.
