This is an edited version of the article, "The Midnight Ride of April 18th, , was my grandmother's birthday, which was why she often regaled us grandchildren with a review of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem, Paul Revere's Ride :. While many Americans today believe Longfellow's version as gospel, the poet took significant liberties in his retelling of the story. Revere was one of many dozen riders that night, some of whom even rode longer distances. And sadly, Revere's artistic contributions -- his unequalled silversmithing skills -- have been eclipsed, undeservedly, by the ghostly vision of him galloping through the shadows. At the time of Revere's ride, many of the Patriot leaders, including John Hancock and Samuel Adams, had bounties on their heads, and had left Boston to hide out in the countryside. So it was to warn them of possible impending capture or assassination that both Paul Revere and William Dawes were dispatched from Boston to ride separate routes to Lexington. On the 18th of April Sunday, April 18, Every year, on the 18th of April, our mother would intone the early lines of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem. They still celebrate the events in Massachusetts, with their own State holiday, called Patriots' Day. Nowadays it is a Monday holiday, rather than occurring on the 18th, just as Nebraska's Arbor Day is celebrated as a Friday holiday, rather than on J. Sterling Morten's birthday. In more recent history for me, Patriots' Day also marks the running of the Boston Marathon, and those of you who have been reading my blogs for years know that this is a special event for me, having encouraged my brother into finding his joy in running. He first ran the Boston Marathon in , and last ran it in , although he met me in Boston in , just months before his passing. In , Kevin was in an air boot, when he came to the 5K on the Saturday before, to cheer me on. We took in a Red Sox game with a local friend on Sunday. And we were both spectators at Kenmore Square, a mile from the finish line of the Marathon on Monday.
