The Spanish firm Grifols helped set off a kerfuffle last year when it, along with other firms, offered nearly double the going price for blood donations for a COVID treatment trial. Brigham Young University in Idaho had to threaten some enterprising students with suspension to keep them from intentionally trying to contract COVID The trial failed, however, and now the Barcelona-based firm is hoping to extract something far more valuable from the plasma of young volunteers: a set of microscopic molecules that could reverse the process of aging itself. The discovery adds to a hot area of inquiry called geroscience that "seeks to understand molecular and cellular mechanisms that make aging a major risk factor and driver of common chronic conditions and diseases of older adulthood," according to the National Institutes of Health. In the last six years, Alkahest has identified more than 8, proteins in the blood that show potential promise as therapies. Its efforts and those of Grifols have resulted in at least six phase 2 trials completed or underway to treat a wide range of age-related diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Researchers have identified molecular signatures of the aging process in mice, publishing their results today in the open-access eLife journal.
Challenges facing nursing home staff
Their analyses provide one of the most comprehensive characterisations of the molecular signatures of aging across diverse types of cells from different tissues in a mammal, and will aid future studies on aging and related topics. Aging leads to the decline of major organs and is the main risk click here for many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
While previous studies have highlighted aging us hallmarks of the aging process, the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms remain unclear. The TMS contains overannotated cells from 23 tissues and organs of male and female mice. The original TMS study mainly explored the cell-centric effects of aging, aging us to characterize changes in the composition of cell types within different tissues.
In the current gene-centric study, Zhang and colleagues focused on changes in gene expression that occur during the aging process across different cell types. Using the TMS data, they identified aging-dependent genes in 76 cell types aging us 23 tissues. They then characterized the aging behaviors of these genes that were both shared aging us all cell types 'globally' and agihg to different agkng cells.
The team then used this coordinated activity to develop a single-cell aging score article source on the global aging genes. This new high-resolution aging score revealed that different tissue-cell types in the same animal can have a different aging status, shedding light on the diverse aging process across aging us types of cells.
