For her, it was the most puzzling thing in the world. Like they were traveling to another country. Govrin, who was born in , recalls a moment at the age of 11 when a friend of her mother told her that Rega was a Holocaust survivor. The pieces began to come together after her mother died, in , when a Haredi woman, Rachel Shantzer, from Bnei Brak, came to the shivah. The women acted as a single unit, as a mutual aid group, and thanks to their connection, almost all of them survived the war. Growing up in Montreal, Judy Batalion was surrounded by vibrant Jewish culture and role models. She attended Jewish school where she learned Yiddish, and was particularly close with her Bubbe Zelda, a Holocaust survivor from Poland.
Bubbe Zelda had escaped Nazi-occupied Warsaw and made her way east to the Soviet Union where she was imprisoned in Siberian work camps and saved from death in Nazi hands. Judy considered herself well educated about the Holocaust, yet she discovered holocaust women little she knew about Jewish resistance. After studying at Harvard, then moving to London to earn a Ph. Born in in Budapest, Hannah was a holocaust women writer and an ardent Zionist. When she was 18, inshe moved to Israel where she worked on a kibbutz and wrote beautiful poetry and accounts about life in Israel.
