Reasons for the demise of the Western Roman Empire, and its famous army, are all over the place, and yours are as good as anyone else's. I have tended to agree not roman military life much with Adrian Goldsworthy as with Guy Halsall on the rather leisurely demise of the West. IIRC, Goldsworthy compares the late Empire to an aging athlete, one who gets too old to compete any longer at least at an elite level. Halsall thinks the weakness went deeper into society, with new identities that required new approaches to fulfilling their needs both barbarians, and also the regional aristocracies that no longer saw the Empire as they once had.

A gradual breaking down of attitudes toward institutions in the West and also the burden of supporting them through taxation had an effect on the regional elites - the "senatorial" aristocracy and other land owners - to the degree that they had begun to take on an identity that more served their needs, and their self interest.
