For some reason, he feels safer. Harry has noticed that the insects and critters thinned out an hour back, leaving the absolute thrumming silence to be broken only by their rhythmic undergrowth-crunching feet. No more glowing mushrooms or algae, no more drips of sunlight. The undergrowth is also more fragile, wispier, skinnier. He sees only because of the faint blue-grey moonish glow expelled by the trees.
But, something is different. Instead of wet and moss and danger, he smells rot. Like smooth glass, like glaze.
A syrupy wet texture. The grey has darkened to a thick gloopy tar, only visible by the moonlight reflecting off of it. He feels smaller than ever in this wide endless forest. He feels two-foot tall.
Life cannot naturally grow here. Look at the ground. No grass. No ferns. The trees coat themselves in tar to repel the Darkness seeping into them from the soil. But they are stunted. Shorter lives. Shorter trunks.
