The Coral Greenhouse is the first underwater museum in the southern hemisphere and the first Australian installation for Jason deCaires Taylor. The works bring into focus diverse fields of study including marine science, coral gardening, underwater and environmental art and architecture. It provides a starting point and new perspective for an understanding of the Great Barrier Reef and its ecology. The design of The Coral Greenhouse is biomorphic and its form was determined by the forces of nature. As the sculptures are slowly colonised and built upon by the reef, they will be gradually absorbed into its surroundings, illustrating an organic architectural philosophy that centres on the unification and connection of designs to their surroundings. King is the manager at the site, known as Green Central, and says the non-profit starts planting the seeds in January. The plants will stay in the pots for another couple of weeks before they are put in baskets to fully mature outside. Then, they will go out to the city the first week of June. The flower baskets have given folks a reason to look up in the downtown corridor every summer. Others are engineering ways to live with it. Branded JJ Green House—complete with suitably botanical greenhouse experiment and a leafy logo—the new facility comprises two floors of informational displays and installations, including a trio of model greenhouses.
