An eighty-year-old woman is lying in bed reflecting on her past and present situation. Her neat and orderly life is slipping away as death is coming to claim her. She drifts in and out of consciousness as her family, a doctor, and a priest gather around her. She spends much of the early part of the story arguing with a doctor she believes is too young to tell her what to do and being critical of the daughter that is trying to care for her through her final days. As the story continues she drifts back and forth between the past and the present experiences of her life. She becomes aware of her imminent death and the memory of a lover from long ago that broke her heart creeps into the forefront of her mind. She used characterization through indirect presentation, symbolism, irony, figurative language and an intriguing third person point of view to carry the reader on this journey with Granny to her final moment. The reader is given unfettered access to the thoughts and memories of Ellen Weatherall making the reader the narrator of the tale from the perspective of Granny. This method of narration has the ability to quickly engross the reader into the character whose thoughts and experiences they are reading. The first line gives an indication of the tough and independent character that Ellen Weatherall is.
