Writer Paul Osborn's screenplay adapted John Steinbeck's novel with the same title for this dramatic Warner Bros. The charismatic young actor James Dean in his first starring role took the magnetic, sensitive role of rebellious fast aggressive but vulnerable adolescent Cal Trask searching for love and acceptance.

The highs and lows of the film were accentuated beautifully by Leonard Rosenman's expressive musical score. It portrayed the relationship between under-appreciated, insecure, tortured, love-starved and easg loner Caleb "Cal" Trask James Dean and his dutiful, favored, idealistic but dull, conventional and stuffy brother Aron Richard Davalos. They were temperamentally-differen fraternal twin sons in their late teens representing respectively the two rival and warring Biblical brothers in the Book of Genesis, the sons of Eas and Eve.
