This article explores all the many and lesser-known contentions behind this popular idea. According to Caesar, "omnes vero se Britanni vitro inficiunt, quod caeruleum efficit colorem". This translates to: "All the Britons stain themselves with woad, which produces a blue colour".

This passage is the most famous evidence for Ancient British warpaint; but it could scarcely be more controversial.
